Implementing Personal Security When Removing a Disgruntled Employee

Personal security services are needed across all industries. You’ll see our Twin City Security uniformed security officers at events, monitoring access points, and providing nighttime patrol.

While proactively deterring crime is always our goal, there are times our services are required when reacting to an active threat of violence. A common scenario is when a company terminates a disgruntled employee.

Disgruntled Employees — Causes & Outcomes

Understanding possible causes and common outcomes leading to disgruntlement is important for business owners, managers, and supervisors. Knowing the signs can help reiterate that you are not overreacting when it comes to the safety of you, your team, or your property.

According to the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), there are a few common causes for disgruntlement:

  • Need for recognition. Showing appreciation is motivating for all employees. When people’s efforts aren’t recognized or misrecognized, a passive-aggressive demeanor can follow.

  • Poor performance review. Nobody enjoys receiving negative feedback. How people take feedback varies greatly. Jobs are important and a sense of failure can quickly lead to frustration and anger.

  • Disrespectful behavior or disregard. Employees must be treated with respect. Favoritism and unfair treatment happens and is a cause for disgruntlement.

  • Domestic & health issues. Work and co-workers are a large part of our lives. It’s easy for our personal and work lives to overlap. Whether or not an employee shares issues and struggles affecting them personally, factors outside of work can have a large impact on work performance and behavior.

These causes for disgruntlement often lead to absenteeism, poor performance, a bad attitude, and conflict in the workplace.

Removing a Disgruntled Employee

While every business has its own processes and policies, there are times employees must be removed for the sake of the business and the rest of the team. In most cases, the removal or firing of a problematic employee fixes the problem. In other cases, the disgruntled employee can make threats of violence or harm.

Threats come in many forms including break room banter, phone calls, and text messages, or emails. Past issues or behaviors may also lead you to believe the individual is capable of such behavior without a documented threat.

Workplace violence is not something that just happens on TV or we see on the news. Acts of violence or threats happen everywhere and it’s something businesses of all sizes need to prepare for.

Whether a legitimate threat is received or you have reason to believe a past employee may be capable of causing harm is the time to implement added security measures.

  • Implement personal security — either around the clock or when your facility is most vulnerable.

  • Restrict access to your premises.

  • Communicate to your team so they’re aware when a specific individual is no longer welcome on the property.

  • Inform local law enforcement.

Keep Your Staff Safe

The combination of good communication and added security measures are the perfect combination to greatly offset the likelihood of workplace violence, theft, or other forms of mistreatment. How you respond sets immediate precedence to the individual in question as well as the rest of your team that such behavior is not tolerated.

At Twin City Security, one of our top priorities is to deter crime from happening in the first place. And when not deterred, security officers are trained to de-escalate hostile situations and efficiently engage law enforcement. Your actions also bring peace of mind to the rest of your team and show that you care about their personal safety.
