Theft: An Issue Affecting Rochester and Beyond
The issue of theft is ever-present. From catalytic converters stolen off of busses, vehicles snatched while an owner leaves them running, bicycles and personal belongings taken from commuter parking areas — all of these topics have made the headlines in the Rochester area this year.
While hearing of theft is common, the reality is these occurrences are often devastating to businesses that end up with a loss. Stopping theft is no easy feat. Thieves often have little regard for fences and barricades. While mask-wearing remains prevalent, concealing faces is easier than ever, leaving camera footage less than helpful.
Combating Theft
What’s a business owner to do? Prevention is critical to reducing losses related to theft. Tracking down thieves and successfully getting your property back or recouping your costs is not only time consuming, but a costly effort.
Adding additional security measures to your business continuity plan is a great first step. Personal security is a proven measure for crime deterrence. The presence of a security officer will have most petty criminals running the other way when they see the risk of getting caught has increased.
Larceny — The Theft of Personal Property
Deterring larceny and theft of any sort is a primary focus for the unarmed officers of Twin City Security. A recent study reviewed the average value of various larceny-theft categories. Here are a few of interest:
Shoplifting: The average occurrence is valued at $338

Motor Vehicle Accessories: $690
From Buildings: $663
Just turn on the local news and you’re sure to hear about the issue of theft in Minnesota. From personal property to identity fraud, theft is an unfortunate reality in the world we live in. Here are just a couple additional examples:
St. Paul — auto thefts are up 15% from just a year ago
Consumers lost $56 billion to identity fraud last year
Who’s Susceptible To Theft?
While auto-related theft may come to mind first, the construction industry is another vulnerable business sector. While lumber and other building materials remain at an all-time high, these materials become ever intriguing to thieves. And the nature of the industry, where building materials and equipment are often left outdoors, it’s no secret construction sites are often susceptible.
Take the time to review your own business. Are you taking security seriously? It’s important to remember theft can occur in many ways. Whether it’s checks and balances in your accounting department, minimizing the number of keys in circulation, or implementing personal security officers — remaining proactive is your best bet in reducing your exposure to theft.
